Science

First Place

Even in a Cave, Music Can Shine Bright
For it Does Not Have to Undergo the Dark Spotlight
By Briana Girala

In a world where you are blind all you want to do is hide
Yet none of us mind, so we just stay inside
Instead of hanging around the surface of the ocean blue
We go ahead and roam the cave water’s through and through

The sun’s rays as our main source does not reach us
Leaving us in the darkness of our own shadows
That always seem to surround us

Some of us provide a light
And it seems to shine bright
Luring us in
To the trap of the grimness within

Where the sounds of our movements develop a harmonic chorus
The song can be dreadful, yet it could be delightful

This is our home

Where no one is unknown

Although we describe each other as flawless

We know no one outside of our habitat will adore us

The vibration of our nation

The crescendo of familiar noises that makes up our population

Makes our senses tingle as we mingle

And swim in each other's tinkle

Some may judge us

But they can just get run over by a bus

Because here everyone is family

Where we will greet each other with bliss for all of eternity

We rely on others,
Depend on one another

As we swim, we’re together
And will never feel better
Than we are now

Where we are safe and sound
Surviving with each other our whole life round
until our life song has come to its coda

Second Place

By Amelie Morales

Astonishing blue waves,
Crash up against the sea,
Sweet smell of a new day,
Flows throughout the air,
Waves have a shiny surface,
Gleaming as the sunshine hits.

It’s peaceful and optimistic,
Like a classical ensemble,
Trumpets playing in the background,
Grand piano playing adagio,
Marvelous, tranquil, harmonic ocean,
So magnificent.

The tone rises sharply,
While the people come,
The people slaughter,
Discord, demented, dark,
Debris scattered over the Earth,
Departing trees and blackened sky.

Skyscrapers,
Blinding lights,
Sea turtles harmed,
Trees cut down,
Buildings built,
Life is like a forte,
Ozone layer crippled,
Crisp winters,
Scorched summers.
World ending,
Loud, beating metronome,
Dogs die,
Cats die,
Birds die,
Sorrow surrounds.

People of Miami remember,
Showing respect,
Showing admiration,
Sharing love again,
A calm sempre,
Immeasurable, wondrous, and competent.

Third Place

By Amy Munoz

Generations
The day where the sun is out
Children laughing, parents talking
Birds singing, leaves floating in the air
And clean water calmly passing by down the stream
Saying hello to everyone it sees
Comfort and warmth can be felt
Under the sun, while laying down on the grass
Adults go to work in the field
While children go to school
By the end of the day
Girls are playing with their Dolls made out of leftover Cloth
Boys are playing with their wooden cars and planes
This was my Mother’s world
In the mountain, where everyone can roam freely
When it rains
There is no sorrow
Instead, you see the people dancing in the rain
Showing their little jigs
Their smiles light up the atmosphere
Hymns can be heard every weekend
Fiddles made out of cardboard and fish liner
Maracas made out of plastic water bottles
With small rocks from the river
You can hear the Duet of the instruments
From a mile away
In a City
Where all you can hear is cars honking
Motorcycles booming
There isn’t a chorus of birds when you wake up
Buildings and lights interfere
The grimy beach water causes a stench in the air
Marine life fades away
As red tide spreads
People wake up early in the morning
The adults go to work
Kids go to school
Everyone half-asleep
Grief flows through everyone
As the skies begin to cry
People run under the nearest roof
Trying not to get wet
I don’t mind
A change can help and make everything better
Music
It has its own dynamics
Songs today have the same message
But express it with different lyrics
This is what I think because
This is my generation, my music, my ocean
And the most important part of all

This is my Miami

We breathe the same air!

Has anyone ever told u how dumb you are?

I have eyes, I have lips, I have a nose, I’m no different!

Does it really matter?

Why is different bad?

Just because...

Exactly...

(turn to face each other)

Your puzzled, confused...

Intimidated, nervous...

Don’t be afraid to be different

Don’t be afraid to be bold or stand out

And most certainly...

Don’t let people hold you back

Don’t let people close doors that lead to opportunities

Don’t let people tie you down to the surface of Earth when you were meant to touch the stars

Why? Why us?

I am as rare and different as the rings of Saturn
My emotions are colored like the beauty that is earth
The strokes change in every movement
And the wind gradually lifts the paintbrush as the ticking of the clock comes to the coda
Everything stops, the metronome, the movement of my breath
The delicate touch of the canvas and my continuous thoughts perform a duet for my ears
Each star representing a character and moment
Showing me that life has its troubles and giving
Venus is my fear for being an outcast, looking in without a key, different from my peers, alone in despair
Mercury is my anger towards my being, is there a true meaning that I just don’t understand?
Jupiter is my envy to those who have more- friends, a loving family, talent, intelligence
Neptune is everything I have lost, everything I had but disappeared

Do you think that the sun and the moon fight each other?
Do you think the moon pushes the sun down till the decrescendo fades into the cold dark night?
Or do you think that they respect each other and let each other live their life in peace?
Do you think that the stars try to out shine each other in the sky?
Or do you think they respect that they all shine differently?
Do you think that humans bully others for being different?

Or do you think humans support and respect others?
Do you think that it is a choice?
“No” I know it is a choice
A choice that everyone must make
That point in your life that you have to say, “different isn’t bad”

Social media, some children at iPrep, and the internet in general spreads a message of hate,

Hate towards different…

Hate towards strange…

Hate towards unique….

Why do our Instagram feeds have to have the same color scheme?

Why do our social media’s have to show the “perfect” bodies?

Why do we have to have a filter on Snapchat in order to be beautiful?

Why can’t we all be different as each and every planet?

Let’s all be different.

(We are going to change our direction we are facing every so often and will speak loudly as well as speak with our faces. Sometimes we will speak at the same time and sometimes may speak alone.
Additionally, we are going to add hand movements to greatly express how we feel inside and out.)
