By Natalie Balladares, Senior Many think that October is synonymous with terror, fear, costumes, and of course, Halloween; however, in iPrep, October is synonymous with the United Way campaign that the Student Government Association (SGA) organizes annually to collect funds and donations for the organization. Thus, iPrep Academy thrusts into a month of homeroom competitions-- where ice cream or breakfast and the satisfaction of giving is the ultimate reward.
At the end of the campaign, SGA hosts HOOP IT UP! --a special tradition that is close and dear to our hearts. SGA produces a street fair celebration during regular school hours where the high school students participate in a fun filled fundraising day. During that day, there are different events: a basketball competition, pie eating contest, a hula hoop contest, apple bobbing, and a DJ blasting tunes for all of us to dance. Yes, the event is always a favorite for all students from freshmen to seniors. The money raised goes to the campaign, yet many students may not realize the importance of United Way or even the purpose of the organization. United Way is a non profit organization that works with local United Way offices to offer help, support, and fundraising for community related activities. According to the United Way's official website, the purpose of the United Way is “advancing the common good.” United Way Miami, especially, focuses on supporting causes that have to do with education, financial stability, and health issues in our district of Miami-Dade County because they believe that these ideals are necessary for a strong community. For example, many youth programs like YMCA and Boy Scouts are funded because it helps at-risk youth become part of the local community. Overall, the United Way extends a helping hand to our wonderful district and I am truly proud to donate to the program. Homeroom Representatives have a meeting on September 26th, so they will have the information for you! Stay tuned!
